WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a gentle, noninvasive approach to promote wellness that utilizes universal life-force energy. Universal life-force energy is also known as spirit, chi (Chinese), or ki (Japanese), and prana (Indian). The word Reiki is actually a Japanese word that comprises two words: rei and ki. In the Japanese language, these words can mean different things depending on how they are used or combined with other words. When put together as Reiki, rei means universal spirit, higher power, or God; and ki alludes to the life energy that indwells all living things. Therefore Reiki means “life energy guided by God.” It is not the Reiki practitioner’s own energy source that is being utilized to facilitate and promote balance and wellness but a higher source of energy (from God) that is channeled through the practitioner. This is one thing that separates Reiki from other forms of energy work.

Who Can Benefit from Reiki?

In a nutshell, everyone can benefit from receiving Reiki. But the most important reason to study it and become attuned to it is to help yourself! When becoming attuned to the first level of Reiki, many are anxious to work on their friends and family. That’s wonderful, but remember to give yourself daily treatments (even 15 minutes) for the first two or three months after the first level attunement. After that, a self-treatment three times a week is good to keep yourself in balance and connected to the Reiki energy. The first level attunement will work within you on a deep energetic level, clearing out blockages and knocking lose some old, worn-out patterns of behavior that no longer serve you. Think of the time following an attunement as a period of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual cleansing and change, knowing that the highest good will transpire.

Besides using Reiki for self-care, here are some other uses for it:

  • treating people with physical pain or illness

  • treating people going through a major life transition (divorce, death of a loved one, retirement, job loss, caretaking an ill family member)

  • treating people under emotional stress

  • treating children for physical and emotional problems

  • treating pets and animals

  • comforting the dying as they transition from this world into the next

  • spiritual growth (for self and others)

  • manifestation of goals
