The Seven Major Chakras of the Human Energy System

The chakras are energy centers in our bodies that serve as a map of our inner world—our relationship to self and how we experience energy.  They are storehouses and transmitters of universal energy, running from the base of the spine to the top of the head (crown).  In general, illness in the body is related to an imbalance of energy or a blockage of energy in the main chakra centers. There are also approximately 21 minor chakras, some of which are located in the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, behind the knees, in front of each ear, at the stomach, and so on. In the seven major chakras, the energy is active on the front and back of the body. The front side relates to more emotional/mental (higher vibrational) energies; the back side relates to more physical (lower vibrational) energies.

 

Note: The vibrational frequencies get higher as you move up the chakras (from root to crown), from the physical to the spiritual.

First Chakra: Root

Location: Base of tailbone

Color association: Red

Verbs: “I Have.” and "All is one."

Function: tribal/family identity, survival (food, clothing, shelter), primal instinct, physical needs, “safety in numbers”, “fear or faith” thinking, material security, grounding, full acceptance of earthly life, loyalty, honor, justice, ability to stand up for oneself, feeling "at home", social and familial systems of law and order

Weaknesses/Imbalances: fears of survival, abandonment of family/tribe, not feeling physically secure, not grounded; immune-related disorders, depression, chronic lower back pain, sciatica, issues relating to legs/bones/feet 

 

Second Chakra: Sacral

Location: Pelvis (lower abdomen to navel area)

Color association: Orange

Verbs: “I feel.” and "Honor one another."  

Function: relationships, personal creativity (music, art, writing), desire, sexuality, enjoyment of life, authority, sense of personal identity and boundaries, power of choice, personal ethics and morals, money issues

Weaknesses/Imbalances: using personal power for domination, fears relating to loss of control of personal power or of physical body, relational issues, financial issues, inability to make decisions, creative blocks, blame and guilt, chronic lower back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain/disorders, urinary problems, Ob/gyn issues

 

Third Chakra: Solar Plexus

Location: Above navel, below chest

Color association: Yellow

Verbs: “I can.” and "Honor oneself."

Function: self-control, courage, individuality, self-assertion, authority, social identity, self-esteem, personal power, self-respect, intuition on a gut level with the self-esteem and courage to follow through with that guidance, endurance, stamina, linear thinking, trust, care of self, responsibility for making decisions, 

Weaknesses/Imbalances: poor self-esteem, fear of rejection or looking foolish (fears related to physical appearance), oversensitivity to criticism, fears of secrets exposed, lack of self-discipline, lack of stamina, lack of belief in self, intimidation; arthritis, ulcers (gastric or duodenal), colon/intestinal issues, diabetes (pancreas imbalance), chronic indigestion, anorexia/bulemia, adrenal dysfunction, liver dysfunction

 

Fourth Chakra: Heart

Location: Center of chest

Color association: Green

Verbs: “I love.” (love of self, others, humanity) and "Love is divine power."

Function: love, compassion, forgiveness, hope, trust, the ability to heal self and others, unconditional/divine love, selflessness, unity, cooperation, harmony, warmth, sincerity, devotion, ability to commit, "Love is divine power."

Weaknesses/Imbalances: resentment, inability to forgive others and self, fear of emotional weakness, lack of compassion, hatred and jealousy, lack of self-love, selfishness, bitterness, self-centeredness, grief, anger, loneliness; heart failure, asthma/allergies, lung cancer, breast cancer, chronic bronchitis

 

• The fourth chakra mediates the lower three chakras (root, sacral, solar plexus) with the upper two (brow and crown). It is the central powerhouse of the human energy system.

 

Fifth Chakra: Throat

Location: Throat area

Color association: Blue

Verbs: “I speak.” and "Surrender personal will to divine will."

Function: faith, self-knowledge, keeping our word, communication, integrity, wisdom, speaking one’s truth, perception, finding one’s voice, acceptance of one’s personal uniqueness/creativity, confidence, personal expression, surrendering to Divine will, taking responsibility for our actions, power of the spoken word

Weaknesses/Imbalances: fear of expressing our creativity or beliefs or personal truths, poor communication, guarded self-expression, lying to self or others, lack of faith

 

Sixth Chakra: Brow

Location: Center of forehead

Color association: Indigo

Verbs: “I see.” and "Seek only truth."

Associated gland: Pituitary

Function: intuition, clairvoyance, inner vision, ESP, manifestation, imagination, mental ideas/images, inner knowing, awareness of a larger reality (God), astral plane (collective consciousness), prophetic insight, seeing Divine perfection in things, transcendence, concentration,

Weaknesses/Imbalances: fear of truth, fear of sound judgment, fear of discipline, fear of listening to intuitive guidance, judgmental, lack of vision and insight

 

Seventh Chakra: Crown

Location: Top of Head

Color association: Purple (or White)

Verb: “I know.” and "Live in the present moment."

Associated gland: Pineal

Function: Divine wisdom, unity with God, bliss, enlightenment (though fleeting), knowing, understanding, faith in inner guidance, insight into healing, trust that eclipses common fears, living in the present moment, mystical connections, seeking devotion to God, integration of spiritual and physical self.

Weaknesses/Imbalances: fears relating to “the dark night of the soul”, loss of identity, and loss of connection with life and those around us, not living in the present moment, resistance to Divine connection
